Why buy EKOenergy?
Fossil fuels are still the main energy source for the European electricity sector. As a result, electricity production (and consumption) leads to enormous greenhouse gas emissions. The good news is that we know how to replace these fossil fuels. Renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydro and biomass are able to provide 100% of the electricity that Europe needs and more.
As a European consumer you are not an outsider in this transition: by choosing EKOenergy you can really make a difference.
Consumer demand for renewable electricity in general has a positive impact on the investment decisions of companies. Nobody would invest in coal power stations if nobody was willing to buy the electricity originating from coal.
On top of that, for each MWh of EKOenergy sold, at least 10 eurocents goes to the EKOenergy Cimate Fund. That money is used to invest in new renewable electricity installations.
Good for climate and nature
EKOenergy electricity comes from installations that fulfil the sustainability criteria of the EKOenergy network, an international network of environmental NGOs.
The criteria are different for different types of production – see the sustainability chapter for more information.
In the case of hydropower, EKOenergy works with a fund model. For each MWh of EKOenergy sold, at least 10 eurocents are reinvested in river restoration projects.
International carbon footprinting standards such as Greenhouse Gas Protocol and organisations such as CDP encourage companies to do more than “simply buying green electricity”. The purchase of EKOenergy labelled electricity is a good way to go one step further.
