Frequently asked questions about EKOenergy
Who is EKOenergy?
EKOenergy is a network of 45 environmental organisations (and more will join). Together we promote the use of renewable energy and we develop tools to make renewable energy installations even more sustainable.
In the network, all members have one vote and decisions are taken with a 3/4 majority. When the network started in 2012, the members appointed the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation to host the Secretariat of the Network. This decision is valid until the members decide to host the Secretariat somewhere else.
Does EKOenergy produce or sell electricity?
No. EKOenergy promotes the use of renewable electricity. We communicate about the advantages of renewable electricity and we look for constructive solutions for problems caused by (some) renewable power plants.
One of our most visible tools to reach this goal is the EKOenergy label. Electricity sellers can sell electricity with our label if they fulfil all the criteria listed in our text ‘EKOenergy – network and label‘. The key elements of our criteria are consumer information, sustainability, contribution to the Climate Fund and proper tracking of electricity and auditing. See the ecolabel-chapter of this website.
How does EKOenergy finance its activities?
Our main resource is the enthusiasm of our members and of many individuals volunteering for our organisation. Since the start of EKOenergy in 2012, over 25 young people from 13 countries have volunteered at the Secretariat, and over 100 people have been involved in the translation of this website.
Our main financial resource comes from the licence fees for the use of the EKOenergy label. The license fee is 8 eurocents per sold MWh of EKOenergy. This fee is paid by the electricity suppliers using our label.
We also welcome donations, either to finance the activities of the network, or to support projects realised through the EKOenergy Climate Fund or the EKOenergy Environmental Fund.
Why an ecolabel? Is normal green electricity not enough?
Consumers of green electricity get the guarantee, that somewhere in Europe, renewable electricity has been put on the grid. But there is no guarantee that this energy has been sustainably produced, nor that the purchase leads to results that would not have taken place without the green purchase.
This is where EKOenergy comes in. We unite tens of thousands of consumers. And the number grows every day. Together we can make a difference. We set sustainability criteria for the production of the electricity, and via our Climate Fund, we finance climate projects that wouldn’t have happened without us. In the ‘Our results‘ chapter, you find an overview of what we are doing together.
LEED, a standard for ecological buildings, refers to EKOenergy as “the best available pan-European option for the sustainable and additional consumption of renewable electricity within Europe. EKOenergy certifies renewable electricity that goes beyond the regulations of European directives and national governments of Europe.”
