Frequently Asked Questions.
> How do you ensure that my energy tariff fulfils EKOenergy’s criteria?
EKOenergy acts as a third-party certifier in the global guarantee of origin market. Every megawatt-hour used as EKOenergy is audited annually to ensure that production and consumption comply with the established rules.
> How does EKOenergy differ from other renewable energy?
EKOenergy is always renewable energy, but it also meets the criteria set by environmental organisations regarding the environmental impact of production. This means, for example, that power plants cannot be located in key biodiversity areas, hydropower must consider the natural migration of fish, and biomass power plants use only renewable materials that are unsuitable for other purposes. Additionally, EKOenergy funds renewable energy projects in low- and middle-income countries, as well as environmental restoration projects.
> How are the funds collected by EKOenergy used?
€0.08 per MWh is used for managing the ecolabel and promoting the position of renewable energy globally. €0.10 per MWh funds renewable energy projects in developing countries. These projects are implemented by non-profit organisations in collaboration with local communities. For hydropower, €0.10 per MWh is used to fund river restoration projects in countries where EKOenergy-labelled hydropower is produced and consumed.
> Can I buy EKOenergy-labelled electricity and gas in country X?
Yes, it can. EKOenergy is available on all inhabited continents and in over 80 countries. Some EKOenergy retailers operate globally. We are happy to assist with challenging procurement situations. You can contact us directly in your own language at info@ekoenergy.org.
