River landscape

The catchment area from the headwaters to the sea is one system for the organisms that live there. Routes for fish migration should be opened up and streams restored, or compensatory channels should be created to ensure good spawning grounds.

This is an imaginary freshwater system in Finland. How do the environmental impacts of hydropower appear in this landscape? Can you find these four rivers?

  • a natural river
  • a constructed river, lower reach
  • a constructed river, upper reach
  • a restored river
