Why choose EKOenergy-labelled energy?

There are many reasons to choose EKOenergy-labelled energy

Our non-profit ecolabel can be combined with all types of renewable energy and all types of procurement methods. There are many reasons to choose EKOenergy-labelled energy. Here we address a few.

EKOenergy enables energy consumers to be active participants in the energy transition

As an energy consumer, you are not an outsider to the energy transition. By choosing renewable energy, you actively signal your demand for clean energy to the market and act against burning fossil fuels.

Using EKOenergy-labelled energy is a way to go even further, for companies, households, and others. It’s an efficient instrument to bring additional sustainability criteria to the sector and help consumers contribute to new clean energy projects.

Consumers of EKOenergy-labelled energy also help us as an environmental initiative to promote climate-friendly legislation and raise awareness worldwide.

EKOenergy is easy to use

EKOenergy simplifies your search for energy that has minimal impact on the environment. Using EKOenergy-labelled green energy enables you to address all five dimensions of leadership as identified in the paper “Business leadership in the transition to renewable electricity” by RE100, the Climate Group, and CDP.

Our non-profit ecolabel can be combined with all types of renewable energy sources, such as green tariffs (i.e. traditional renewable energy contracts including household electricity contracts), unbundled purchase of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and renewables produced on-site.

EKOenergy-labelled energy is used in over 70 countries, and the number of our authorised sellers is growing each year.

EKOenergy has minimal impact on nature

Our ecolabel is an initiative of environmental NGOs and has no other motive than to promote climate action and biodiversity protection.

We want renewable energy in harmony with nature. EKOenergy sets additional sustainability criteria for the origin of renewable electricity, gas, heat or cold, as a means to minimise negative impact on ecosystems.

For example, EKOenergy-labelled windpower comes from wind turbines located outside of important bird areas, and EKOenergy-labelled hydropower comes from hydropower plants that take fish migration and river dynamics into account. For each MWh of EKOenergy-labelled hydropower, 0.10 € (ten euro cents) are spent on river restoration projects.

EKOenergy raises funds for new renewable energy projects

When you choose EKOenergy, you also help finance renewable energy projects in developing countries. For every megawatt-hour (MWh) of EKOenergy-labelled energy, 0.10 € (ten euro cents) go to EKOenergy’s Climate Fund. Through our Climate Fund, we finance projects aimed at alleviating energy poverty and providing sustainable energy where it is needed most.

All financed projects are selected in a transparent way and implemented by experienced organisations. These projects contribute to the realisation of multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

EKOenergy for communication

The ecolabel is a tool for companies and individuals to demonstrate their commitment to renewable energy. Using the logo informs and encourages others to do the same. The EKOenergy logo is easily recognisable and internationally protected.
