Lappeenranta: The first EKOenergy city in the world

The wonderful city of Lappeenranta has decided to switch to EKOenergy! Today, Mayor Kimmo Jarva and Lappeenranta Energy’s CEO Reijo Kolehmainen signed an agreement guaranteeing EKOenergy for the city of Lappeenranta for the period 2017-2020. At the signing ceremony, the city also got the EKOenergy certificate.

Program manager of EKOenergy Riku Eskelinen says that Lappeenranta Energy’s biomass and wind power-based electricity has received the EKOenergy label after passing the strict sustainability criteria.

“It’s an awesome thing that the City of Lappeenranta switches to renewable energy which meets our strict sustainability criteria! Many cities in Europe are already using renewable electricity, but  as far as we know Lappeenranta  becomes the first city to use electricity which also meets renewable sustainability criteria”

“By committing to EKOenergy the city leads the way for businesses and residents in the region while taking a significant step towards the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80 per cent from the 2007 level by 2030. Our status as the climate capital of Finland obliges us to do environmentally friendly actions” Jarva says.

The mayor encourages businesses and residents to follow the city’s example “By making environmentally friendly choices we can improve the status and cleanliness of our environment, but also help the green business infrastructure,  thus improving employment opportunities in the region”.
