This is in order to ensure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Energy has been produced in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/ecolabel\/\">our sustainability criteria<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewable attributes aren\u2019t subject to double counting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies are placing increasing importance on sourcing green energy. Because of this, tracking systems are being developed for different types of renewable energy. EKOenergy is closely following developments in the tracking of renewable electricity, renewable gas, and renewable heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hereafter you find more information, as well as an overview of tracking systems that are accepted to prove the origin of EKOenergy-labelled energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tracking of electricity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Electricity cannot be tracked along the electricity grid. All the electricity produced, whether from clean energy or fossil fuel sources,  is mixed when it is added to the grid. \u201cBook and claim\u201d systems (such as  Guarantees of Origin and I-RECs) were developed to make it possible for consumers to claim a specific amount and type of renewable electricity as theirs. These are databases in which producers can register or \u201cbook\u201d how much, when and how they have produced electricity. Consumers can \u201cclaim\u201d green electricity based on this information. Energy  Attribute Certificates (EACs) are issued as proof of a renewable electricity purchase. Buying green power is not possible without proving its origin with these certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main objectives of tracking systems are to keep the consumer informed and to avoid double counting. Avoiding double counting is important to ensure that no other consumer claims to use the same green electricity as another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certificates generated from renewable resources have to be used (i.e. cancelled or redeemed) in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol  Scope 2 Guidance: \u201cAll contractual instruments used in the market-based  method for Scope 2 accounting shall be issued and redeemed as close as  possible to the period of energy consumption to which the instrument is  applied\u201d and \u201cshall be sourced from the same market in which the  reporting entity\u2019s electricity-consuming operations are located.\u201d  (p.60). When you use EKOenergy-ecolabelled electricity, these criteria are fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Introduction to Tracking Renewable Electricity - GOs \/ RECs\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tXltgmoao_4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guarantees of Origin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe, tracking certificates are called Guarantees of Origin (GO or GoO). National GO registries are run by state-appointed entities such as regulators or grid operators. The EKOenergy ecolabel works with GOs in the EU for electricity tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legal basis for the system is article 19 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2018.328.01.0082.01.ENG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Directive 2018\/2001 of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RECs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the USA and Canada, electricity tracking certificates are called Renewable Electricity Certificates (RECs). REC ownership is necessary to claim the use of renewable electricity. RECs are used both in the voluntary and compliance markets. Read more in the Center for Resource Solutions\u2019 paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Legal-Basis-for-RECs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Legal Basis for Renewable Energy Certificates<\/a> (PDF). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the use of the EKOenergy label in the US and Canada, RECs are necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I-REC Certificates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irecstandard.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The International REC Standard<\/a> is a nonprofit organisation that works to provide robust attribute tracking systems (EAC systems) around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an energy ecolabel, EKOenergy works with I-RECs to bring a standard tracking system to countries such as in Turkey, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and South Africa. <a href=\"https:\/\/evident.services\/device-register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A list of countries with I-REC registries<\/a> can be found on the I-REC website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EKOenergy accepts certificates based on the I-REC Standard for tracking of EKOenergy-ecolabelled electricity if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The I-RECs are used within 12 months after the production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The same production for the I-REC has not been used to generate a carbon offset credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National tracking certificates and other tracking instruments <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>EKOenergy is open to working with other tracking systems, as long as they fulfil our criteria in which double counting is avoided and information is transparent. Different certificate schemes can complement each other but this may present a risk of double counting. Specific cases will be evaluated based on the country of electricity consumption. Feel free to contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/about-us\/contact-us\/\">EKOenergy Secretariat<\/a> if you have questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TIGR<\/strong> certificates are frequently used as to track EKOenergy in various markets in East Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other previously accepted tracking instruments are mentioned below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>China: <\/strong>Chinese Green Energy Certificates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Japan:<\/strong> J-Credits, Green Power Certificates and Non-Fossil Value Credits (NFC) are being used in Japan, in addition to the I-RECs. Along with the RE100 and CDP, EKOenergy is also closely following the developments in Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/state-of-the-japanese-renewable-energy-market\/\">currently accepts all 4 schemes available<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taiwan:<\/strong> Common practice favours I-RECs in Taiwan. EKOenergy also accepts Taiwanese RECs (T-RECs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Australia:<\/strong> Generation and sales of renewable electricity in Australia are done through Australian RECs. These include small-scale technology certificates (STCs) and large-scale generation certificates (LGCs). Australian RECs are accepted for tracking EKOenergy-ecolabelled electricity in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tracking for on-site production, PPAs and electricity contracts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from green energy contracts: on-site production, PPAs (power purchase agreements) and unbundled certificate purchases are other ways in which to source renewable electricity. Regardless of the method, the  EKOenergy ecolabel makes sure that double counting is avoided. This means when the produced electricity comes through the grid, consumers can only claim that they use renewable electricity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the EACs have been issued for that production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If these have been cancelled in the consumer\u2019s name. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of on-site production, usually no tracking certificates will be issued since the electricity is directly delivered to a specific consumer, without passing the grid. However, if EACs <em>are<\/em> issued for such locally consumed electricity, these should be cancelled\/redeemed on behalf of the local consumer in order to avoid any risks of double counting. The EKOenergy criteria specify that the consumer always has to be informed about the country (or region) of origin of the electricity they purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EKOenergy-labelled energy follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/why-buy\/other-standards\/\">Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard&nbsp;as well as the&nbsp;practices that CDP supports<\/a>.  In cases where tracking certificates aren\u2019t available in certain countries, we believe that showing flexibility helps to give the right signals to the market and thus contributes to the development of reliable tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tracking of renewable gas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"old gaspipe ending in nature\" class=\"wp-image-8289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/old-gaspipe-ending-in-nature.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>EKOenergy is looking to work with reliable and independent tracking systems for gas that are open to all interested market players and exclude double counting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preferably there will be only one accepted tracking system per country or only one accepted tracking system per type of gas, i.e. biogas, power-to-gas, etc. Feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/about-us\/contact-us\/\">get in touch with us<\/a> for further information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is no tracking system in a given country, the EKOenergy  Board will evaluate the tracking solution suggested by the seller. The approval of such a system is temporary. Private tracking systems are automatically replaced by official systems as soon as these exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EKOenergy currently accepts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All existing biomethane registers in the EU (EU Guarantees of Origin for Renewable Gas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UK Green Gas Certification Scheme<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CertifHy\u2019s certification scheme for hydrogen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information regarding the tracking of renewable gas, see Chapter 5 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekoenergy.org\/vi\/ecolabel\/criteria\/ekoenergy-gas\/\">EKOenergy\u2019s criteria for renewable gas<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tracking of energy For EKOenergy it is important that the origin of clean energy can be tracked in a reliable way.
