Repowering Ukraine
As a result of constant massive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the country has faced a humanitarian crisis: a large number of power plants, transformer substations, and power lines have been destroyed or damaged, leading to power outages, water supply disruptions, and heating interruptions throughout the country. Consequently, many Ukrainians have been left without essential utility services necessary for survival. Meanwhile, critical infrastructure facilities such as schools and hospitals are operating on the brink, facing the threat of complete power outages.
Ukraine needs more power fast, and solar and wind play a crucial role in providing that power:
- Solar and wind can be deployed fast, and are now the cheapest forms of energy production.
- Solar and wind are decentralised, and therefore more resistant to attacks. One bomb or drone can destroy a fossil fuel power plant, but cannot take out a complete wind farm or a multitude of small and medium-sized solar installations.
- The reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy sector should obviously be future-oriented, and therefore low-carbon.
Our support for the energy transition in Ukraine
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, we have been consistently expressing our support to Ukraine both through donations and other acts of solidarity. Since 2022, we have allocated a total of €270,000 to organisations successfully implementing renewable energy projects in Ukraine. With EKOenergy’s grants, RePower Ukraine and #Renewables4Ukraine have enabled the installation of solar systems in hospitals, schools and daycare centres in various communities severely affected by the war.
For example, in 2025, a portion of our grant was used to install a PV system in a kindergarten in Irpin, as part of the Renewables4Ukraine campaign. Read more about the project here. And the NGO RePower Ukraine is using another part of this year’s grant to build a solar system at a hospital in the Lviv Region.
In addition, we have shown our solidarity with Ukraine by regularly attending demonstrations, signing petitions and calls for watertight measures against Russian fossil fuels, and urging a transition away from dependence on oil and gas
