Once a year, we take a moment to highlight and award some of the most extraordinary achievements.
One of our annual awards is the EKOenergy’s Bamboo Award, for the fastest growth rate of EKOenergy sales. We are happy to announce that the Bamboo Award 2024 goes to the Finnish energy supplier Väre. Väre’s sales team made special efforts to promote EKOenergy to their business clients, and they are now reaping the fruits of these actions.

We asked Johannes Gylen, Portfolio Manager at Väre, to tell us more about Väre and its success in selling EKOenergy-labelled volumes.
Can you tell me a bit about Väre?
Väre is a Finnish energy service company and one of the largest electricity sellers in Finland. We provide responsible energy services to consumers as well as companies of all sizes, housing associations, and the public sector. Our goal is to sell as little electricity as possible to our customers: with the most comprehensive service offering in the energy sector, we significantly reduce our customers’ energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Our business customers have achieved up to 20% lower electricity costs by using our services. We offer our customers the Väppi service (energy coach application), one of Finland’s most respected energy applications, which allows them to manage their electricity consumption and reduce its costs.
How does EKOenergy fit into Väre’s vision and strategy?
We aim to be an active, reliable, and knowledgeable partner for our customers in sustainable management of electricity costs and emissions. We help our customers reduce their carbon dioxide emissions and electricity usage costs, as well as increase their energy self-sufficiency, while maximising their energy setup’s potential to even generate returns with our services.
EKOenergy, along with our other certified electricity products, is one of our most popular services among business customers because it provides a cost-effective and quick way to reliably cut business carbon dioxide emissions. Sustainability has become one of the most important aspects of business operations, and this is also reflected at Väre through the growing demand for renewable energy.
What is the secret to your last year’s success?
With EKOenergy, our customers can ensure that the electricity they use is certified with renewable energy guarantees of origin and produced responsibly according to EKOenergy’s sustainability criteria. Through a versatile product selection, Väre’s customers can choose the guarantees of origin they need, and Väre helps them achieve their own sustainability goals. Väre’s customers can choose between EKOenergy, green electricity (wind, hydro, solar, or bioenergy), nuclear power, or electricity without guarantees of origin.
The key reasons for the increase in sales of guarantees of origin are the success of Väre’s efficient sales team and the growing customer interest in obtaining guarantees of origin and EKOenergy.
Why do your customers choose EKOenergy-labelled energy?
Interest in electricity guarantees of origin has grown, and with it, interest in EKOenergy. The desire of people and companies to buy responsibly produced electricity has increased due to media coverage, emission reduction goals, and electricity companies’ marketing efforts. Companies can also use guarantees of origin in their own marketing. For example, Väre’s customer Olvi (a famous finnish brewery and soft drinks company) has prominently used the EKOenergy label on its packaging. Businesses can enhance their image and increase sales by marketing the sustainability of their operations.
What do you like most about EKOenergy?
There is demand in the market for responsibly produced electricity. It is important that EKOenergy can meet this demand and offer consumers a product that meets the environmental label criteria.
Additionally, I like the „Flower Plug” logo. The logo is simple and clear, making it easy for companies to use in their marketing.
