EKOenergy’s criteria

Our internationally recognised ecolabel helps consumers find the most sustainable renewable energy and helps them to increase their positive impact.

EKOenergy is a label for renewable energy, not for companies or production devices. Our criteria set rules with regard to the impact of energy production on nature, take into account tracking and avoidance of double counting, and offer ways to create additional impact in the fight against climate change. Click here for a summary of these components. EKOenergy executes annual audits to ensure that all energy that carries our logo fulfils our requirements.

There are criteria for electricity, gas and heat and cold.

For clarity, we have compiled information about energy from on-site installations and PPAs, and energy tracking in dedicated subpages. The information on these pages combines relevant parts from our 3 criteria texts.

The development and approval of EKOenergy’s criteria follow the rules of the ISEAL Standard-setting Code. They are based on active consultation of all relevant stakeholder groups and on best-practice.

Our criteria enter into force after approval from the Board of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and endorsement from the other environmental NGOs that founded EKOenergy in 2013.
