EKOenergy funds new multi-year solar energy project in Madagascar

More renewable energy projects each year

For every megawatt-hour of EKOenergy, a minimum of €0.10 is allocated to our Climate Fund and used to support carefully selected solar energy projects in low- and middle-income countries. All funded projects demonstrate how renewable energy can improve the living conditions of under-resourced communities and contribute to achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

As EKOenergy continues to grow, so does our Climate Fund, enabling us to support an increasing number of renewable energy projects each year. Over the past years, we have granted more than €9 million to over 130 projects, demonstrating the broad impact of our work.

We are now proud to announce the launch of a new four-year solar energy project in Madagascar, funded with a total of 1,511,580 USD (€1.4 million). This project builds on our ongoing commitment to support sustainable energy access in rural communities. Earlier this year, we have already approved funding for three other multi-year projects of similar scale, as well as six smaller initiatives – and more are still to come!

Supporting green energy transition in Madagascar

The project focuses on the rural region of Amoron’i Mania, in central Madagascar, where access to electricity is among the lowest in the country. Only 4.8% of rural households currently have access to electricity, leaving tens of thousands of people without reliable energy for their homes, schools, health centers, and businesses.

With our financial support, GRET and its local partners will implement an ambitious project aimed at improving living conditions, fostering economic development, and promoting ecological resilience. They will install mini-grids and multi-service solar platforms, using technologies that have already successfully been implemented in their previous community energy projects in Madagascar. Importantly, the project adopts a participatory approach, involving communities and municipalities in needs assessments, service design, and daily operations.

Over the next four years, the project will bring electricity to households and public facilities, including schools and health centers, while supporting local entrepreneurs and farmers with solar-powered equipment and training to develop income-generating activities.

By providing reliable energy for both domestic and economic purposes, the project will enhance productivity, food security, and the overall quality of life for more than 48,000 people across five communes. At the same time, solar infrastructures will be built using local, bio-sourced materials and low-carbon construction methods, and community programs will promote sustainable water and land management practices. A local Malagasy social enterprise, SM3E, will ensure the long-term affordability and operation of the energy services, demonstrating the potential of social entrepreneurship to deliver sustainable and inclusive energy solutions in remote rural areas.

Help us do more

Each year, we receive hundreds of applications from highly promising and impactful renewable energy projects. Despite our growth, this demand vastly exceeds the resources available through the Climate Fund. Therefore, we warmly welcome all additional support.

Would you like to support renewable energy initiatives that improve livelihoods, empower communities, and tackle climate change? Please contact your seller and ask to switch your contract to EKOenergy-labelled energy. Switching to EKOenergy is possible regardless of your procurement model: our non-profit ecolabel can be combined with all types of renewable energy sources, such as green tariffs (i.e. traditional renewable energy contracts including household electricity contracts), unbundled purchases of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and on-site renewables.

If you are already an EKOenergy user, consider making additional contributions to our Climate Fund to support projects such as electrifying schools and health centers in Africa, South America, or Asia.

Larger EKOenergy corporate consumers can participate in selecting which projects to support. Our projects span a wide range of sectors worldwide and can align with your company’s specific priorities.
