☀ In June 2024, we granted €48,971 from our Cl

☀ In June 2024, we granted €48,971 from our Climate Fund to the nonprofit organisation Health and Rural Development (HARD) Balochistan, to bring solar-powered lights and fans to +120 households, 5 schools and 7 rural health centres in hard-to-reach villages in District Khuzdar, Balochistan, Pakistan.

HARD and their local partners also installed a solar-powered water pump to improve access to clean water and gave training about climate change, climate change adaptation, and maintenance of solar systems. All activities happened in close cooperation with the local communities.

We just received a touching video showcasing some of the results of this impactful project. You can find it on our YouTube channel via the link in our bio.

As the narrator in the video says: "The project is a shining example of how harnessing renewable energy can illuminate not just lives, but the
path to a greener, more equitable future."

👨🏽‍⚖️ In a huge victory for campaigner

👨🏽‍⚖️ In a huge victory for campaigners and activists, Scotland’s Court of Session has today ruled that the 2023 approval of the Rosebank oil field was unlawful, as it did not account for the emissions that would be caused by burning the field’s oil.

The judge ordered that Rosebank’s approval now be overturned (‘reduced’), meaning it is no longer legally valid.

This is incredible news, and a monumental victory in the fight for a liveable future for all. Congratulations to all those involved in the actions and campaigns against the Rosebank oilfield.

The UK government will have the chance to remake the decision after their oil & gas consultation concludes in spring 2025.

That’s why it's essential to keep the pressure on. Stopping Rosebank would set a powerful precedent and help us bring an end to all new oil and gas, and start a rapid energy transition in line with climate science.

💻 With some of the team, we watched today's launch of the European Electricity Review 2025, an annual report compiled by @emberenergyresearch .

The European Electricity Review 2025 analyses full-year electricity generation and demand data for 2024 in all EU-27 countries to understand the region’s progress in transitioning from fossil fuels to clean electricity.

It was good to get some hopeful and promising facts! Here are some of Ember's findings:

- "Solar was the fastest growing EU power source in 2024; capacity additions hit a record high and generation was 22% higher than in 2023. Solar (11%, 304 TWh) overtook coal (10%, 269 TWh) for the first time."

- "Between 2019 and 2024, the surge of renewable power was widespread across the bloc. In this time, the number of countries where renewables produce more electricity than fossil fuels rose from 12 to 20. As a result of its power sector transformation, the EU has cemented its position as a leader in clean power. The emissions intensity of EU electricity generation fell 26% over the last five years."

- "Since the launch of the European Green Deal, rising wind and solar has driven a decline in fossil generation. Wind and solar installed in the past five years have cumulatively avoided 15% of fossil generation (736 TWh) over the period."

- "Beyond reducing emissions, growth in wind and solar spurred on by the European Green Deal has delivered huge benefits to the EU through reduced energy costs and enhanced security. Without wind and solar capacity additions over the first five years of the European Green Deal, the EU would have spent an additional €59 billion on fossil fuel imports for power generation: €53 billion for fossil gas and €6 billion for hard coal."

📈 It took the solar PV industry 68 years to reach 1 TW of installed capacity - from 1954-2022. It has taken only 2 years to reach the next TW (2022-2024), with the 2 TW milestone at the end of last year, according to estimates calculated by the Global Solar Council and SolarPower Europe.

2 TW of solar is equivalent to the total installed electricity capacity of India, the USA and UK combined and could power an estimated one billion homes, based on a global average household energy consumption of 3,500 kWh per year and a 20% capacity factor.

Solar energy is becoming the backbone of the global energy system. The deployment of solar energy has exponentially accelerated in recent years, carrying with it dramatic cost reductions that make solar now the cheapest form of energy available to consumers in many countries across the globe.

☀ Last year, we granted €48,971 from our Climate Fund to the non-profit organisation Health and Rural Development (HARD) Balochistan.

With our financial support, they brought solar power to households, schools, and rural health centres in off-grid, hard-to-reach areas of the Khuzdar district, Balochistan, Pakistan.

HARD and their local partners also installed a solar-powered water pump to improve access to clean water and gave training about climate change, climate change adaptation, and maintenance of solar systems.

All activities happened in close cooperation with the local communities.

We just received hundreds of photos from all project locations, and showing various stages of the implementation: people gathering to plan, the transport and distribution of the equipment, the installation, the training, solar-powered fans and lights, the water pump...

☀ While far too many decision-makers are stuck in the past and focus on gas, oil, or nuclear as "necessary for our economy", others are fully embracing the sun's limitless energy.

The developments in the solar sector in China are particularly spectacular.

By massively deploying solar, China:
- is making itself energy-independent.
- is investing in products and services that serve rapidly growing markets. The demand for solar systems is growing fast worldwide.
- experiments with cross-benefits. For example, China is using solar farms in the fight against desertification: under solar panels, the soil dries not so fast, and plants get shadow.
- will likely be able to bring down its carbon emissions from this year onward.

⛑ In mid-2024, VAADD, a Togolese nonprofit organisation, received a €23,758 grant from EKOenergy's Climate Fund to install a multifunctional solar powerhouse in an off-grid village.

They just informed us that they finalised the installation and sent many photos.

The solar system has a capacity of 10.12 KWp and includes battery storage. It generates power for a cassava mill, lighting, and all kinds of small electric devices.

🛢 US President Joe Biden announced that he will ban drilling in more than 2.5 million square kilometers off the US West Coast. He can do so based on the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.

Because this law doesn't provide a precise mechanism for how such a decision can be made undone afterward, it will be difficult for the next president to change this. And in a couple of years, any new oil exploration will hopefully become completely unthinkable, thanks to the decreasing cost of renewable energy (and, unfortunately, also because of the escalating costs of global warming.)
