🌍 In accordance with some research conducted by the insurance coverage agency Swiss Re, natural “services” such as food, clean water and air, and flood protection have already been damaged by human activity.

More than half of the world's GDP – $42tn (£32tn) – depends upon high-functioning biodiversity, according to the report. Unfortunately there is a rising threat that we are now reaching the tipping point.

According to Swiss Re's index measuring a company's threat to biodiversity and ecosystems, certain locations such as Australia, Israel and South Africa are close to the highest threat level, with India, Spain and Belgium close behind. Areas with fragile ecosystems and huge farming sectors, such as Pakistan and Nigeria, are also flagged up.

☀️ Did you know that solar is now the cheapest electricity in history? According to the International Energy Agency, the world's best solar power schemes now offer cheaper electricity than coal and gas in most major countries.

This was stated in the IEA’s annual World Energy Outlook (WEO), which is released every autumn and contains some of the most detailed analyses of the global energy system. The report includes several different sections which reflect the degree of uncertainty associated with the many decisions that will affect the future path of the global economy. It aims to inform policymakers by showing how their plans need to change if they want to shift onto a more sustainable path.

🇬🇷 Greece might stop heavily relying on fossil fuels and has the potential to become one of the leaders of the energy transition in Europe by 2030. It is predicted that economics alone can drive the Greek power sector to over 90% renewable electricity by 2050.

Today, 70% of Greek electricity is generated from lignite, a low-quality coal, and natural gas. The move away from these fossil fuels is driven by the increasing availability of renewables. It is already more affordable in Greece to source power from wind or solar compared to extracting new lignite or gas from the ground. New offshore wind is also expected to start competing with fossil fuels as early as 2025.

More importantly, it is already cheaper to build a new wind or solar power plant than to run existing lignite assets, thanks to diminishing costs on renewable sources of energy. By 2025, building new renewables may also be cheaper than running existing gas plants.

🛍️ Today the fashion industry is working faster than ever. Retailers are now putting out new clothes every single week, instead of producing new clothes and designs four times a year like they used to back in the day. The amount of clothes produced has notably increased in the past decades while clothing prices and quality have declined. People are buying four times as much clothing as they used to but are spending 17% less as clothes fall apart or go out of style quickly. Hence, people throw them in the trash and buy something new.

Furthermore, studies have shown that 60% of the clothes produced worldwide are made from synthetic materials (e.g. polyester, nylon, acrylic) a.k.a. plastic. When thrown away, they often sit in landfills for hundreds of years, if not forever. Buying secondhand means you’ll be keeping plastic out of landfills and positively contributing to the decrease in worldwide textile demand and subsequent waste.

🇯🇵 In recent years, extreme weather events have been more frequent in Japan and they are also becoming more intense. Japan is experiencing an increasing number of torrential rains and record-breaking heatwaves caused by climate change.

The main reason that climate change exists in the modern world is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. This releases an enormous amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases. In order to slow down global warming, we need to limit our use of fossil fuels, thereofre reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Actions against coal power are now being taken in Japan. Japan Beyond Coal is a campaign that aims for a phase-out of coal-fired power in Japan by 2030 to help with the current climate crisis and create a clean and sustainable society. Beyond Coal campaigns are also underway in the US, Europe, Australia, and Korea, all with the shared goal of a phase-out of coal power by 2030.

🌞 Update about the green energy project finance

🌞 Update about the green energy project financed by the users of EKOenergy-labelled energy: Bringing Solar to the Pandu Gupha Health Post (PGHP) in Jumla, Nepal. At the end of September 2020, GRID Alternatives installed a battery-powered, off-grid solar 5.9 kW system, giving the facility the ability to generate its own electricity for years to come.

The PGHP is a health clinic and birthing center located in the village of Pandu Gupha in Nepal that serves approximately 2,000 households and an estimated 10,000 residents from surrounding communities. While it is equipped with a full staff and a host of medical electrical devices and diagnostic equipment, it currently lacks a reliable source of electricity to power the facility.

With access to clean, reliable electricity, the staff at PGHP will be able to power quality lighting and fully utilise their medical and diagnostic equipment, vaccine refrigeration, and warming beds for newborn babies. This will provide thousands of residents with 24-hour quality medical services for common diseases, physical injuries, and maternal and child healthcare.

🏡 Using carpets at home can save energy as they maintain room warmth. Carpets and rugs have low thermal conductivity and are natural insulators that create a heat barrier.

As a result, up to 10% of the ambient heat that would dissipate through the floor is retained by the carpets in the room. This can lead to a significant reduction in heat loss during cold seasons. It is estimated that it can result in energy savings of around 4-6% and a consequent reduction in heating bills.
