Three more multi-annual projects with support from Microsoft

Thanks to contributions from Microsoft via its renewable energy procurement, EKOenergy’s Climate Fund recently allocated €4.2 million to support three multi-year renewable energy projects in Malaysia, Malawi, and Nepal.

These projects illustrate the scale of change that corporate energy choices can drive.

Solar-powered mini-grids in Malaysia

A $1,458,539.00 grant will enable Green Empowerment and its partners to bring solar-powered, community-managed mini-grids to four remote Indigenous communities in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. All involved communities are extremely remote—about 2 to 4 hours of driving from the nearest town—and accessible only by foot or by 4-wheel drive vehicles via unpaved roads, with some requiring boat travel.

These communities currently rely on individual diesel generators, which can run for only 3 to 6 hours per day. The solar-powered mini-grids will provide reliable electricity while reducing household energy costs, supporting education and healthcare, and fostering women’s entrepreneurship. These mini-grids will also serve as a model for other communities in the region.

Expanding solar access in Malawi

With only 14% of the population having access to electricity, millions rely on unsafe, polluting energy sources. EKOenergy’s €1.4 million funding to SolarAid supports a large-scale solar distribution network, aiming to reach 2.9 million people with affordable solar lighting and empowering local energy entrepreneurs.

Solar energy for water and sanitation in Nepal

A $1,347,450.00 initiative by Renewable World will provide clean water and improved sanitation to 4,665 people in nine hilltop communities in Jajarkot, Nepal. The project leverages solar-powered systems to reduce the prevalence of waterborne illnesses. Additionally, it aims to improve educational opportunities and the dignity of school-aged girls by addressing menstrual hygiene challenges.

The initiative also supports climate-resilient agricultural practices, thus enhancing food security and income for smallholder farmers. Local water user committees receive the necessary skills and resources to manage these systems effectively, ensuring long-term sustainability.
